reason’s why many high school students fail state examinations, drop out of school and fail to attend college; due to poor elementary school preparation, curriculum standard are not explicit enough for students to understand and lack of parents involvement in their children education.
As a classroom teacher for about ten years in the public high school setting, I can conveniently say that I have seen students of all shades and characters of their inability to relate to what they are being taught in the classroom. It is my believe that this article will shed more light on the reasons why our high school student do not perform well in their academic work and find themselves in the vicious circle of social vices like drugs, prostitution and gangs .
After presenting this topic for a discussion with my colleagues, below are some of their responses by a mathematics teacher. For example Mrs. Ogbemudia said “Mathematics teachers are indirectly being forced to teach the peripheral of the topic as provided by the New Jersey common core standard which was designed to treat topics surface and train students to pass examination without going in-depth because the algebra 2 common core stand are design to teach five different unrelated topic in five days for forty-three minutes period each. These are some of the reasons why these students get frustrated and begin to constitute nuisance in the classroom because they cannot understand what they are been taught, eventually many of them drop out of school with the impression that academic work are too difficulty or they are not college or academic material.”
While Mr. Ramos one of the administrator in the school, said that “the work is too difficult for student to understand because they are missing the basic foundation of the subject because teachers are literally being forced to rush through curriculum while students are being promoted to the next grade level without fulfilling the prerequisites of the grade they are moving for the fear of not being held responsible for failing students. On the other hand, the society is blaming the teachers for student failing the state examinations and even consider taking teacher tenure if their students do not pass the board or state examination, whereas, everybody have got a role to play in the duty of educating these students properly.” Based on this conversation I had with my colleagues on the above topic, I conclude that in other to equip the student with the right information and values to succeed in life, it will take the collective responsibility of parents, teachers and educational administrators.
