MSND – Play within a Play
Several of Shakespeare’s plays contain the thematic and structural element of the play-within-a-play. In this comedy, the play of Pyramus and Thisbe performed by the guildsmen of Athens is an integral component of the entirety of the play. For this post, I want you to analyze the play-within-a-play’s placement and function within the entirety of MSND. Some questions to consider in answering this post:
What is the play-within-a-play about? (e.g. what is the story?)
Why are the guildsmen performers?
How are their parts assocatiated with their characters and with other characters in the play?
What is their play about? And how does that interact with the thematics of the rest of the play?
What reactions do the nobility have to the play (3 sets of newly married couples)?
