The MSN EBP proposal includes two types of information: 1) research process and 2) MSN EBP proposal learning activity. Items in GREEN are Research Process Steps; Items in Blue are MSN assignment learning activity requirements. The MSN learning activities would NOT be part of a formal research proposal.

The introduction provides an opening to your MSN evidence-based project (EBP).
No heading should be used but is understood to be the first paragraph-DO NOT USE the word introduction
First, capture the interest of the reader by creating a sense of urgency about the nursing problem; clearly present the topic and problem; excite the reader with important statistics
Second main idea is comparison of research and EBP
End the introductory paragraph with a sentence that states the purpose of the EBP proposal; also referred to as the purpose statement of the paper which relates to the project, not the assignment
Length: 1 page: one paragraph for problem and proposal purpose; one paragraph for EBP ? Nursing Concern, in research known as BACKGROUND and SIGNIFICANCE section of a research proposal (separated from introduction) The area or phenomenon of interest section is often labeled as background and significance in published articles. The FOCUS is the PROBLEM not the intervention.
Required 5 research studies (the 15 research studies are split between nursing concern and research support sections)
Identification of key research findings that support the need for developing an EBP project to resolve the problem
Present evidence as if you were preparing an argument about why the project needs to be conducted.
Rationale for selecting the specific issue. Explain how the problem relates to your specialty track
Identify the proposed solution, limit to ONE or TWO sentences. The evidence of the solution appears in the research support section, not the problem section of the research proposal.
Identify the stakeholders relevant to the problem and/or solution. Define who are the stakeholders and why a stakeholder.
Present problem statement-use level two heading. Problem statement is one sentence, which is an incomplete paragraph.
Recommended length: 2-3 pages. Select the most compelling evidence to explain the severity of the problem. ? Purpose and PICOT/PICo Question (use level one and two headings and write one sentence)
State the Purpose of the research proposal in one sentence.
State the PICOT/PICo question, include each letter of the PICOT model in the question, using one letter in each parenthesis. DO NOT list the components of the PICOTPiCO question in separate sentences.
Research purpose and question is one sentence for purpose and one sentence for research question and is not expected to be a complete paragraph.
Use level two headings for purpose and research question
The format of your question varies with the research approach used to gather the data to answer the question
If a quantitative research approach is used, the format is PICOT
If a qualitative research approach is used, the format is PICo Theoretical Framework
Identify the Theoretical Framework that will be used in the project.
Identify which theoretical concept or proposition will be used to develop the research proposal. Rarely does a researcher use the ENTIRE theory-be selective with concept and/or proposition
Discuss how using a framework will assist in development (theory) and implementation (change model) of the project.
Qualitative research uses and presents theory differently from quantitative research methods. Be sure to discuss theory in qualitative research with instructor before submitting assignment.
Recommended length: 2-3 pages
All projects need to be based upon a theoretical or conceptual framework or model
The use of a nursing theory or conceptual framework or model is preferred
A theoretical framework helps to place the selected EBP project into perspective within the nursing profession
