Obviously, buying a more expensive treadmill is probably going to get you a better piece of exercise equipment. However, not everyone can afford or justified spending thousands of dollars on a home treadmill. Therefore, what follows is a
What follows is the tale of two treadmills. Both started out with promise; one fulfilled its promise whilst the other turned bad.
The Weslo Treadmill is one of the most bought brands. It’s
The Weslo Cadence C22 is a $200 treadmill. It’s best suited for walkers rather than runners as the motor speed only goes from 0 – 5 mph. You do get 3 incline positions; 5, 7 and 9%. The Step-by-Step Feedback Console is pretty nice and helps you keep track of speed, time, distance, calories and fat calories burned. As you might expect the treadbelt is small at 13″ by 40″.
The next model up is the Weslo Cadence G-25. It’s similar to the C22 Cadence from Weslo but it does have a slightly longer treadbelt at 43″, so is acceptable for slow jogging. Also, the motor speed is a little faster at 0 – 6 mph. The warranty is slightly better at 90 days. What is surprising is that the G25 is the same price of theC22. If you are going to buy a Weslo treadmill for walking then definitely buy the better valued Weslo Cadence G-25.
For running you really need to think about the Weslo Cadence C44 treadmill. The motor is a 2.25 THP/1.3 CHP Impulse Drive System and gives you a top speed of 10 mph. The treadbelt has acceptable dimensions 17″ x 50″. The LCD display is better though nothing special. You get a 90 day parts and in-home service Warranty It retails for about $400.
Weslo treadmills are very popular and have successfully filled the low-end specification treadmill market. You won’t be getting an exercise treadmill that will meeting more rigorous demands but it was never designed to. The warranty is also very short; most quality warranties will give you 10 year or longer warranties on the motor. But, what can you expect from a treadmill that cost only a few hundred dollars.
The Sportcraft Treadmill is a story of what can go wrong when you try to build a treadmill as cheaply as possible. The company has been making sports equipment since 1926 but it wasn’t until 2001 that it first shipped a treadmill. Sportcraft specializes in the mass production and shipping of low cost sports equipment to retailers like K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and Target. It also tried this approach when supplying the Sportcraft range of treadmills that were made in China and Taiwan. But things have gone badly wrong.
Since 2001 there have been 3 recalls of Sportcraft treadmills – the treadmills could unexpectedly accelerate and cause users to fall and sustain injuries.
The company has redesigned its range of cheap treadmills and is now offering a good warranty for such a cheap treadmill. One of the most expensive – and best models – is the Sportcraft 7.0 treadmill. It retails for around $400. What you get is a 1.5 CHP motor, a 19″x55″ treadbelt, incline adjustment and 6 factory set programs. It’s quite a good-looking unit and its looks will appeal to many.
Should you buy a Sportcraft treadmill? With its history, I wouldn’t, at least I would wait until a few years had gone by without any more recalls being made.
The Weslo is the better of these two cheap home treadmills. The Weslo Cadence C44 treadmill and the Sportcraft 7.0 treadmill cost the same at $400 but with the Weslo treadmill you get a better motor, a better top speed and better build quality.
